Volleyball hosts Union Tuesday

October 13, 2008 by coachwaldo

LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland’s volleyball team hosts rival Union University Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center in a key TranSouth Conference match as the teams head into the stretch run of conference play.

Cumberland lost twice last week on the road in TSAC action, falling 3-0 (15-25, 17-25, 22-25) to Freed-Hardeman and 3-1 (17-25, 25-16, 23-25, 19-25) at Trevecca. The club got back on the right track with a 3-0 victory (25-13, 25-21, 25-23) over Mid-Continent on Friday, evening the squad’s conference mark at 4-4 and upping the overall record to 14-9.

Cumberland and Union have met twice previously this season, with Union winning both outings in closely contested matches. Union won in Jackson on September 16, 3-1 (25-27, 27-25, 21-25, 15-25) and then again 10 days ago in the CU Lady Volleydawg Invitational, a 3-0 Union triumph (15-25, 16-25, 16-25).

Head coach Dwayne Deering, in his 24th year at Cumberland, has seen his team go through the ups and downs this season, including an eight-match winning streak that was snapped last week by Freed-Hardeman and also a four-match losing skid earlier in the year.

“The girls know they can play with [Union]. It’s just a matter of executing it because we match up well with them,” Deering said. “Last time out was a bad match, probably the worst of the year for us. Hopefully we have that out of our system now.”

The Bulldogs play at Bethel on Wednesday and then out of conference to host Reinhardt Saturday at 2 p.m. at Dallas Floyd.

OVU: Ohio Valley University Announces the Ron Pavan Athletic Scholarship

September 29, 2008 by coachwaldo

VIENNA, WV – Ohio Valley University will honor former athletic director Ron Pavan for his outstanding dedication and service to the University Monday, September 29 during a special banquet in Nashville, Tennessee.

The University will recognize Pavan’s accomplishments and contributions by establishing the Ron Pavan Athletic Award, which provides an annual scholarship of $500 to a Fighting Scot women’s basketball player selected by her coaches and teammates for her work ethic, teamwork and leadership ability. The annual banquet, hosted by the University, serves to recognize OVU supporters throughout the middle Tennessee region and contiguous states.

“Ron has served Christian high education with dedication and commitment for more than 22 years. He has proved himself to be a very loyal and faithful friend to Ohio Valley University and this is a wonderful opportunity to honor is work and energy,” OVU Executive Vice President Steve Eckman said.

Pavan served as the Ohio Valley College women’s basketball coach from 1994 to 2005. In 2005 he became Ohio Valley University’s first full-time athletic director. Throughout his 14 year tenure at the school, the University’s athletic programs experienced tremendous growth and successfully graduated hundreds of student-athletes. Pavan was responsible for launching seven sports programs on campus and was instrumental in OVU securing an invitation to compete in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and entrance into NCAA Division II competition.

Prior to his time at OVU, Pavan served as the women’s basketball and softball coach and men’s soccer coach for Northeastern Christian Junior College from 1986 to 1993. In August of 2008, he resigned his post at OVU and accepted the position of athletic director at Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tenn.

Lebanon Democrat: New CU AD honored at luncheon

September 29, 2008 by coachwaldo

Ron Pavan, newly named athletic director at Cumberland University, was introduced to and honored by a group of the school’s staff, athletic students and supporters during a luncheon at Five Oaks Golf and Country Club on Wednesday.

Entering his 23rd year of coaching and administrative experience, Pavan served as athletic director at NCAA Division II Ohio Valley University for 14 years prior to joining the Cumberland staff this month. While there, he successfully added seven varsity programs to the OVU athletic department; oversaw creation of a booster club; moved OVU athletics from NAIA to NCAA Division II, oversaw development of an indoor baseball/softball complex and was named NJCAA Region 19 Coach of the Year in 1991.

Wendy Nadeau, annual giving coordinator at CU, issued the welcome. Dr. Paul Stumb IV, dean of the Labry School of Business and Technology, handled the opening remarks.

“When we think of Cumberland University, what comes to mind first? The nursing school? Criminal justice?” he asked. “Well, it should be something related to sports. Do you realize Cumberland has over 461 student athletes or that we had the second-place winners in the 2006 NAIA Baseball World Series and had the 2004 baseball world champions. We finished in the top 10 at National Collegiate Cycling Association’s National Championship in 2007, were the Women’s Basketball National Tournament runner-up in 2007 and had the No. 17-ranked men’s tennis team in 2007.”

Stumb ended his remarks that Pavan made him feel guilty because “he could be seen every morning at 5:30 a.m. either running or lifting weights. Of course,” Stumb quipped, “I don’t know if that’s because he’s that ambitious or because his wife and three teenage children haven’t moved here yet and he has those morning hours on his hands with nothing to do.”

Pavan was introduced and recognized all the coaches and athletic students in the crowd. He then stated he and Cumberland were going to be doing things that put them out in the community, such as getting involved in fundraisers for cancer, etc. He maintained he had eight goals he would be aiming to achieve and that would be posted on his wall for the coming year. These included:

Believe in ourselves and our goals.

Help others to believe and achieve.

Win championships.

Make sure all students graduate.

Keep a positive attitude.

Build and improve.

Work hard.

Students first.

“I’m a driven person and I know all the coaches here at Cumberland work hard,” Pavan said. “I want to help make positive changes. I want to be a guy behind the scenes who helps build and support our goals.

“Your backyard isn’t just right here, it’s huge and I wake up every morning asking myself how I can help make these changes. But, I believe great days are ahead for Cumberland.”

In answer to a question raised about the stadium at Cumberland, Pavan admitted they needed to raise funds for a new stadium, but that it was probably three years off as a plan and community support was needed.

Dr. Garvin Maffett, vice president for administration, thanked everyone for coming on behalf of the absent university president, Dr. Harvill Eaton, and board president Dr EdwardThackston. He also recognized Ann Floyd and Sarah Jennings and invited each student there to make it a point to meet them because of the facility donations they and their late husbands and families had made to the sports department of Cumberland.

Joe Gray, vice president for administration, gave the closing remarks. “You’ve got a gem in Ron Pavan,” he said. “Stars don’t make a team. Players and their discipline come first. Pavan knows this and he’s going to be a tremendous asset to our teams at Cumberland.”

CU SID: Cumberland FB: Bulldogs fall on the road, 52-37

September 29, 2008 by coachwaldo

LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland rolled up 390 yards of total offense, including 319 through the air from quarterback Matt Eads, but the University of the Cumberlands scored 35 second-half points en route to a 52-37 victory over the Bulldogs Saturday in Williamsburg, Ky.

Cumberland (1-3) scored on the second play of the game and produced 20 points in the second quarter to take a 10-point halftime edge. But the University of the Cumberlands scored early and often in the second half to take the victory.

Eads connected with Michael Moore on a 62-yard scoring strike on the second play of the game for an early CU advantage, though the homestanding Patriots scored twice in the opening quarter as well.

Cumberland’s DaJuan Manning blocked a punt for the Bulldogs in the second quarter, leading to a two-yard plunge from Dexter Elston. Eads then hit Travis Carter on a 45-yard scoring strike later in the quarter and Michael Hinson connected on a pair of field goals, including a 20-yarder on the last play of the half for a 27-17 CU lead at the break.

The University of the Cumberlands took the opening possession of the second half and scored a touchdown, while the Bulldogs responded with a good drive but just a field goal, this one from 48 yards by Hinson. The Patriots added two more TD’s in the quarter and led 45-30 in the fourth quarter.

Cumberland responded with an 11-play, 57-yard scoring drive to pull within eight, capped by a three-yard run from Majors. The Bulldog defense stiffened and got the ball back, but Eads threw and interception that was run back for a touchdown to put the game away for the University of the Cumberlands.

“Everything was dead even in total yards and time of possession,” CU head coach Dewayne Alexander said. “[The University of the Cumberlands] had a really good third quarter. It was back and forth, but we never could stop them in the second half.

Eads finished the game 21-of-35 for 319 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. Tight end Mitch Reynolds had six catches for 51 yards, while running back J.T. Majors carried 17 times for 62 yards and score. Linebacker Stephon Ransom led the defense with 12 tackles.

The Bulldogs play their first home game of the season next Saturday, hosting Bethel College at 1:30 p.m. at Lindsey Donnell Stadium. Homecoming activities begin Monday and conclude Saturday before the game, including tailgating at the stadium sponsored by the Wilson County Sports Council that will feature food from area restaurants.
